Cyclist Demi Vollering also won the second stage of the Tour d’Itzulia, a three-day stage race in the Basque Country, on Saturday. Crossing the many hills started and ended in Mallabia. After a short and difficult climb it was the finish. Vollering, who had already won the opening stage on Friday, distinguished himself from his competitors on the steepest part. Canadian Olivia Baril was second behind the SD Worx driver. Italy’s Marta Cavalli, winner of the Amstel Gold Race and Walloon Arrow, finished third and the Dutch Pauliena Rooijakkers fourth.
The Itzulia Tour is new on the Women’s World Tour calendar. The final stage in San Sebastián continues on Sunday, especially with the rise of the famous Jaizkibel. Vollering is 22 seconds ahead of Rooijakkers in the standings. Only the Americans Kristen Faulkner and Cavalli follow in less than a minute.
