The Finnish government has decided to apply for NATO membership. President Niinistö said this at a press conference.
Over the past few days, everything showed that Finland would most like to join the military alliance. On Thursday, President and Prime Minister Marin expressed their support for membership. And on Tuesday, the defense committee of the Finnish parliament said NATO membership was the best option to ensure national security.
It is unclear exactly how long it will take for Finland to officially join NATO. Thirty NATO member states must accept the arrival of the Finns. Neighboring Sweden is also strongly considering joining.
Turkish objections
Turkey had previously stated that it was against the participation of Sweden and Finland. According to President Erdogan, countries are home to “many terrorist organizations”, referring to Kurdish organizations such as the PKK and YPG.
NATO foreign ministers met yesterday for an informal two-day summit. Here Sweden and Finland tried to resolve Turkey’s objections to accession. NATO Secretary General Stoltenberg said they already welcome it.
