The UK government has identified the top 50 illegal migrants awaiting asylum procedures in Rwanda. Prime Minister Johnson said he would fly over them in two weeks, although he expects this to be delayed by legal action.
The Johnson administration announced last month that some people who have illegally crossed the English Channel will have to wait for their asylum applications to be processed in the African country that is part of the Commonwealth of Nations. The UK is allocating around €150 million to facilitate this.
Prime Minister Johnson said these policies disrupted the business model of gangs smuggling people across the English Channel and “turned the sea into a watery graveyard”. The program would mainly focus on single men arriving in the UK via The Channel.
Opponents speak of the shame of the plan. They point out that this is cumbersome and that Rwanda has a bad reputation when it comes to human rights. Critics of the plan included 160 charities, the Archbishop of Canterbury and former Prime Minister May.
