Fons Lambie says there are no signs of a deal yet. “At NATO headquarters in Brussels, Turkey is expected to eventually accept it. To the outside world, Erdogan is quite strong in his resistance, but you can count on NATO countries such as the US or, for example, Sweden and Finland. They try to satisfy themselves somehow. But the question remains exactly how.”
Zürcher hopes it will eventually become a question of money. “Turkey can be saved with the mediation of the Americans and the countries of the European Union. Think billions of Swedish investments.”
5. Can’t Turkey leave NATO? Or certainly never with the EU?
Zürcher thinks imposing a limit on future EU membership will have little effect. “This process has already largely stopped. Nobody really believes it, so it’s not a powerful weapon anymore.” Nor will there be any other potential lever for Turkey to pull out of NATO to welcome Finland and Sweden. “Nobody is taking advantage of it. Because this will be a great strategic victory for Russia and you will lose a great NATO army.”
That is absolutely impossible,” concludes Fons Lambie. “There are regular irritations and disagreements between Turkey and other NATO countries. But Turkey remains an important country. It is strategically located between Europe and the Middle East, and politically Western countries want to keep Erdogan in alliance.”
