Israeli media: ‘No criminal investigation into journalist’s death’

Israeli media reported that the Israeli military does not intend to criminally investigate the death of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. A US-Palestinian Al Jazeera reporter was shot dead last week during an Israeli attack on the occupied West Bank.

Eyewitnesses say Abu Akleh was shot dead by an Israeli soldier. His employer, Al Jazeera, and the Palestinian authorities spoke of ‘cold blood murder’. Israel said further investigations should determine who fired the fatal shot, and that it could be a Palestinian or an Israeli.

However, the Israeli newspaper Haaretz writes that the Israeli military police’s investigation has decided not to investigate the journalist’s death further. The news was also reported in The Jerusalem Post newspaper. The Israeli army has not yet confirmed the news to NOS.

According to Israeli media, there will be no investigation because there is no indication that the soldiers committed crimes. Also, according to Haaretz, an investigation “will spark resistance and controversy within the military and Israeli society”.

Human rights organizations have criticized this decision. They point out that the vast majority of cases where Palestinians are killed do not lead to proper investigation. “The military doesn’t even bother to be investigated,” Israeli activist group Yesh Din said in a response.

“weapon identified”

At the same time, the AP news agency reported that the Israeli army had discovered a weapon belonging to a soldier who had shot Abu Akleh. The news agency relies on an anonymous source within the military. He again calls on the Palestinians to hand over the bullet that killed the journalist to Israel for investigation.

The ball is in the hands of the Palestinians, but they refuse to give it to Israel. “They committed this crime, so we don’t trust them,” Palestinian President Abbas said earlier. The Palestinians want to do their own research and say they want to cooperate with everyone except Israel.

Abu Akleh’s death last week sparked global outrage, as did images of his funeral. Israeli security forces used intense violence against those who attended the funeral, protecting Israel from fierce international criticism. The Dutch ambassador to Israel also condemned the police action, which he described as disproportionate and disrespectful.
