Marjan Minnesma of climate organization Urgenda was the first Dutch person to win the Goldman Environmental Prize. This important award for the protection of nature and climate is presented annually. An amount of approximately 190,000 euros is at stake.
Minnesma received the prize for winning the controversial Climate Trial. Urgenda was able to argue in court that the Dutch state should have done much more to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In 2019, a ruling by the Supreme Court made this obligation final.
“The climate case has given a lot of hope and has led to the opening of dozens of similar climate cases around the world,” he told the Minnesma Awards organization. “The Netherlands will have achieved a 25% reduction in greenhouse gases by 2020 and must now accelerate to achieve its own 60% CO2 reduction target by 2030. The government is not yet on the right track for this, so we will continue to emphasize it. and propose solutions to make it happen.”
