Belgian ‘flight to Ibiza’ arrested in the Netherlands

A convicted Belgian child rapist who said he had fled to Ibiza has been arrested in Heerlen, Limburg. The Ghent court sentenced Rony Van W. to six years in absentia on Friday. The man apparently responded to the verdict on Facebook under the Spanish sun. “It’s nice and warm here,” he wrote.

Yesterday Van W. was placed on the national list of wanted persons and today he is already incarcerated. “Decent work by our Belgian FAST team and their colleagues in the Netherlands,” said the Belgian Minister of Justice on Twitter. “Small detail: it turned out not even to be in Ibiza.”

FAST teams were deployed to search for fugitives (internationally).

Van W. told Flemish newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws that he was hiding to appeal the decision. “When you’re in jail, there’s no one to help you. Then you can no longer do business as a free man. That is why I hope that my appeal will be accepted as soon as possible and that I can act freely again.” He also stated that he was staying in the Netherlands with his girlfriend before the court decision. It is not known whether he was arrested there.

Van W. was found guilty of child rape, sexual abuse and producing child pornography. The court had previously acquitted him. The Belgian public prosecutor had demanded 10 years against him.
