175 arrests in climate action Extinction Rebellion in Rotterdam

In Rotterdam, 175 demonstrators have been arrested who took part in the actions of the climate protest group Extinction Rebellion. The police reported that 110 of them were arrested in the center and 65 on the Maasvlakte.

Protesters closed down downtown Weena, near the office of the oil and gas company Shell, where bottles of fake blood were emptied this afternoon. Protests were also held at the Onyx coal-fired power station on the Maasvlakte.

The actions “against the fossil fuel industry and for a just transition for the climate” were supposed to end around 3 p.m., but they went unanswered. Police say warnings have been issued. Activists who did not heed the call to end the protest were arrested.

Caught on the street with cocaine and scrapers

The action has been causing traffic nuisance in the center of Rotterdam since the early afternoon. At the Weena, the participants chained themselves to a car. They carried phrases like “Keep the oil down” and “Let the fossil fuel industry die”.

When the police gave the order to end the protest, the participants glued themselves to the street with glue. The police then released the demonstrators with coke and ice scrapers, after which the activists cooperated with the officers, according to the police.

According to the police, the arrests were peaceful:
