The Italians won 1-0 in the Conference League final between Feyenoord and AS Roma last night. That does not hide the Italian sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport. Referring to coach José Mourinho on his website: “The Conference League belongs to Mou!” he’s writing.
“Two goals and a Portuguese”
La Gazzetta won the AS Roma game thanks to this one goal in the first half from 22-year-old Nicolò Zaniolo. Because in the second half “the two posts and the Portuguese goalkeeper held on to the victory”, even though Feyenoord approached the equalizer several times.
The Italian sports newspaper Tuttosport writes that the second half has started with tension. Feyenoord almost tied the score twice, but both times the ball hit the post.
Exciting moments
According to La Gazzetta, Mourinho must have seen how his center of gravity shifted from Rome to Feyenoord at that moment. The coach therefore decided to switch to 3-5-1-1 to give the midfield more cohesion.
“The Netherlands had a few chances,” writes The Guardian about the second half. But all attempts were thwarted or ended badly, leaving Rome behind for the European Cup.”
The French sports newspaper L’equipe praised goalkeeper Rui Patricio for his work in the second half, but according to the newspaper he can “thank the goalposts”.
Coach Arne Slot must have felt like Louis van Gaal or Peter Bosz in the middle of the final, the AD writes.
“It has often proved an impossible task to finish the game in a final fight against a side of Jose Mourinho.” Due to the deficit built up in the first half, “the final did not deliver the coveted party”.
‘King Mourinho’
De Telegraaf also writes that the Rotterdammers did not shoot at ‘King Mourinho’. The Italian coach’s teams have been adept at defending a lead for years, with time wasters, knights and fake injuries. That is exactly what happened with the Conference League final, the newspaper writes.
The German newspaper Bild also praised the Portuguese coach Mourinho. “He is the only manager who has won every European final with his teams,” Bild wrote. The Champions League in 2004 and 2010, the Europa League in 2003 and 2017 and now the Conference League. “No coach has been able to do that.”
