Boris Becker was transferred to another prison in England. The 54-year-old former tennis player spent the first weeks of his jail term for bankruptcy fraud at Wandsworth Prison in London. This complex is known for being overcrowded, with high levels of inmate violence and poor hygiene conditions.
Becker was transferred today to the Huntercombe Detention Center in Nuffield, 70 kilometers west of London, his lawyer told German media. Huntercombe Prison is known for not being very rigid. There are predominantly men from outside the UK.
The prison accommodates approximately 480 inmates. Some are alone in a cell, but there are also cells for several prisoners. It is unclear whether Becker only has a cell or whether he has to share one.
150 million euros
Becker was sentenced to 2.5 years in prison at the end of last month for bankruptcy fraud. Half of the sentence was suspended. Boris Becker was declared bankrupt in 2017, but withheld part of his assets for the board of trustees.
Becker once had a fortune of 150 million euros, but he also spent a lot of money. He led a particularly financially turbulent life after he retired from tennis. A lot of money was invested in deals with ex-wives and in the care of their children.
Boris Becker was the youngest Wimbledon champion in 1985 at the age of 17. He has won five more Grand Slam titles. Becker won a total of 49 tournaments in his 16-year career.
