The enormous fire that broke out last night at several workplaces in Rijswijk has been brought under control. That is what the spokesperson for the Omroep Western Fire Brigade says.
“It’s not like last night when the flames were several meters high and there was a lot of smoke, but we want to prevent the fires from starting again,” the spokesperson said. A crane is used to reach hard-to-reach lamps.
The fire in the workplace broke out around 12.30 pm last night. A lot of smoke could be seen almost over the wider area. There were also explosions in buildings, possibly from gas cylinders. At one point, firefighters from De Lier, Delft, Wateringen, Honsellersdijk, Maasdijk, Monster, Naaldwijk, Maasland, Zoetermeer and Leidschendam-Voorburg were deployed.
The hotel has been released
The Haaglanden security zone reported that an adjacent hotel was evacuated last night. Dozens of guests were accommodated in another hotel. Now that the fire is under control, they can return to their rooms.
Burning buildings on Van Gijnstraat are car manufacturers and garages. Paul Bourguignon, one of many people who came to watch this morning, said: “It’s sad to see. “The oil in the cars is pouring into the streets in a short time,” he said.
Friends of Bourguignon, owner of one of the garages that were set on fire. “They were only there for two months. They had just found their place. Before you put everything in its place, you’ll be on the road for a year,” she says.
The exact damage is not yet clear, but it is expected to be significant. Many buildings were almost completely destroyed by the fire. It is not yet known how the fire started.
