They waited for a representative to be given a master key to access the room. Authorities are now calling it a bad decision, the door should have been knocked on.
wrong idea
Texas Security Chief Steven McCraw said at a news conference that the commander in attendance falsely believed no children were at risk. “I want to apologize for that, if it helps.”
The officers’ apparent ignorance that this was an active gunman situation was made even more painful when at least two children were called to the emergency room. Both children survived the shooting.
Agents kept at a distance
The border police who were on the scene were also relatively quick, but were detained by the local police. Just an hour later, they took out 18-year-old hitman Salvador Ramos.
Ramos fired more than a hundred shots in the hour he was at school. He killed 19 children and 2 teachers. The attacker died after a clash with police.
It also seems like the drama is completely avoidable. The investigation now shows that a police officer who arrived on the scene passed the gunman before he even entered the school. He walked five minutes before Ramos came in, firing at windows around the building.
Alarmed, the officer was after the wrong person at the time. The person he believed to be the shooter turned out to be a teacher.
