Meanwhile, Ukraine is working hard to save art. Many museums have moved their collections to safer places.
They receive help from organizations such as the Aliph Foundation, an international partnership to protect the arts in conflict zones. The organization has opened warehouses in various parts of Ukraine where museums can bring their collections.
“A good storage of art is important,” says Sandra Bialystok of Aliph. “The temperature has to be right, the humidity not too high, everything to secure the art.”
Managers of Ukrainian museums have a huge responsibility on their shoulders. “Many directors have been sleeping in the museum every night for months to protect their collections. They have to be self-sufficient.”

In addition to looting, Russian airstrikes pose a major risk to Ukrainian museums, churches and other historic buildings. Art historian Akinsha says there are indications that they were deliberately shot by the Russians.
