Brazil flood and landslide death toll rises to 84

The death toll from very heavy rainfall in northeastern Brazil has risen to 84. Bad weather conditions caused flooding and landslides.

Most of the victims were in the state of Pernambuco, where dozens of people are still missing. “We will continue to search until we find all the missing people,” the governor of Pernambuco said at a news conference.

A state of emergency has been declared in 14 towns near the port city of Recife. At least 3,900 people lost their homes to the floods. Thousands of people sought refuge with their family or friends.

More rain expected

Heavy rainfall has been reported in the region since Wednesday. In some places it rained more in 24 hours than the average for the whole of May. Officials said more heavy rain is expected in the coming days.

President Bolsonaro pledged to help the military in rescue efforts this weekend. He will be on site today to assess the situation.

Hundreds of people died in Brazil last year from extreme weather and flooding. In February, about 240 people died in natural disasters north of the metropolis of Rio de Janeiro.
