Nationalists injured in West Bank clashes in East Jerusalem

Thousands of Israeli nationalists march in occupied East Jerusalem today. Some shouted “Death to the Arabs” as they walked the streets of the old city, waving Israeli flags. Religious Jewish men, in particular, took part in the controversial flag parade to mark the 55th anniversary of Israel’s conquest of the east of the city in a war with its Arab neighbors. The Red Crescent humanitarian organization said 140 people were injured in the violence that took place in the occupied West Bank today.

The flag march through Jerusalem’s Muslim quarter was a provocation in the eyes of Palestinians and coincided with rising tensions between Israelis and Palestinians. The Israeli police are on high alert for fear of escalating tensions. About 3,000 agents have been deployed throughout Jerusalem, including removing Palestinians from the march. Anyone who did not comply was arrested.

According to the Palestinian news agency Wafa, based on eyewitnesses, the protesters threw stones at the houses in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood of Palestine. Palestinian officials condemned the march, as did neighboring Jordan.

There was already violence in Jerusalem in the morning hours around the Al-Aqsa mosque. According to the news, Al Jazeera, based on the Red Crescent humanitarian aid organization, injured 140 people in the occupied West Bank. Of these, 18 are said to have been shot by Israeli soldiers.
