What did you miss?

Brazilian police have arrested a second person suspected of involvement in the disappearance of a journalist and researcher in the Amazon. This is Oseney da Costa Oliveira, also known as Dos Santos. He is the brother of local fisherman Amarildo da Costa de Oliveira, who was arrested earlier. Also called pelado.

It was alleged that Pelado threatened British journalist Dom Phillips and his fellow Brazilian researcher Bruno Pereira with a gun. Blood was also found on Pelado’s boat.

It is not yet known what happened to the two men who went missing ten days ago in the Javari Valley in northwestern Brazil. They boarded a boat on the Itaqui River to Atalaia do Norte, but never got there.

Phillips writes for the British newspaper The Guardian and was featured in a report. He is working on a book on illegal mining, logging and fishing in the area and violence against indigenous peoples and related environmental issues. In addition to being a researcher, Pereira is also an activist. Police suspect poachers and illegal fishermen are behind the disappearance.
