More than half of the world’s 100 million displaced people stay at home –

Every year since 2012, more people around the world have left their homes to escape war, persecution and other violence. There are currently 100 million displaced persons. The numbers have never been higher than before, the UN refugee agency UNHCR said in a new report. In the vast majority of cases, these are people who have sought refuge within their national borders.

Directory Global Trend Report It exceeds the figures published in May, such as 100 million displaced persons.

“Either the international community will work together to confront this human tragedy, resolve conflicts and find lasting solutions, or this terrible trend will continue,” said UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi.

While avoiding conflict

War, violence, persecution and human rights abuses left nearly 89 million people unattended by the end of 2021. In recent years, new conflicts have erupted and a number of old ones have flared up again, such as in South Sudanese and Myanmar. Last year, according to the World Bank, 23 countries were confronted with conflicts on a local or larger scale.

53.2 million people sought safer shelter within their national borders. 27.1 million refugees went to another country, but did not apply for asylum there.

And then there are 4.4 million refugees in the world: they emigrated to another country and applied for asylum there. UNHCR has a separate category for Venezuelans: 4.4 million people have fled Venezuela but are not always registered as refugees in other countries.
