Sanctions against Marechaussee for discriminatory stickers in enforcement group

The Royal Netherlands Marechaussee has imposed various sanctions and measures on eleven employees for sending “discriminatory messages” in a WhatsApp group of a company. Eleven people worked in the same team at Schiphol.

The Maréchaussée said in a statement that those involved were punished for sending “discriminatory stickers”. Stickers are images that WhatsApp users can create themselves and send to each other. It is unclear how discriminatory the images were.

An employee in a management position has been fired “for putting up stickers and for his role at the events”. Another employee has been transferred. Seven other people involved received a note that will remain in their file for five years. Negotiations are also underway with those involved. The police hopes this will “raise awareness and prevent a repeat of events in the future”.

Decisions were made following an internal investigation launched following a report on the applicant group. Commander Hans Leijtens: “The images viewed and the associated behavior are unacceptable to the military police.” said.
