Hundreds of civilians may have died in violence in Ethiopia

The violence in Ethiopia may have killed hundreds of people. The DPA news agency reports at least a hundred deaths based on witnesses, other witnesses tell the American news agency AP more than 200 deaths. Most of the victims belong to the Amhara ethnic group. Regional officials confirmed the attack.

The attack took place on Saturday in Oromia, the largest region of the East African country. Authorities say the Oromo Liberation Army was behind the attack. The group has denied any involvement in a tweet, saying the government military was behind the attack.

One of the bloodiest recent attacks in Ethiopia. Ethnic tensions have existed in the country for a long time. The Ethiopian Human Rights Commission, set up by the government in Addis Ababa, urged the government to find a “permanent solution” to the civilian deaths and protect them.

terrorist organization

The Oromo Liberation Army seeks greater autonomy for the Oromo people, one of the two main ethnic groups in Ethiopia, along with the Amhara. The Liberation Army was branded a terrorist organization by Ethiopia after consultations with the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

The TPLF ruled Ethiopia for decades until Abiy Ahmed was elected president in 2018. Then an extremely bloody civil war broke out, killing hundreds of thousands of people.
