Telegram officially announced its Premium subscription today. All existing features of the chat service remain free.
With the subscription, Telegram gets a new source of income, in addition to the ads it shows on “one-to-many” channels, where the sender sends messages to a large number of subscribers. According to Durov, such ads are “more successful than expected”.
Subscribers will no longer see such ads. Founder and CEO Pavel Durov recently said, “I think Telegram should be funded primarily by its users, not advertisers. That way, our users will always remain our number one priority.”
Extra options and double limits
For 5 euros per month, Premium subscribers get all kinds of extra options such as animated avatars in chat lists and special stickers with various effects.
In-app limits for subscribers are also doubled. They have access to a thousand channels, 20 chat folders, four accounts, ten favorite stickers and 400 GIFs. In addition, they can use longer bios and subtitles and upload files up to 4 GB. Subscribers also get the option to automatically convert voicemails to text. It is not yet known which languages are supported.
Telegram also announced the launch of authentication checks for public individuals and organizations. The chat service now reports that it has more than 700 million monthly active users.
