Brussels Airport cancels all flights due to strike

Due to a nationwide strike, Brussels Airport is canceling all departing passenger flights today. The airport says passengers will not be able to depart due to this action and lack of security personnel.

Inbound flights and outbound cargo flights will not be cancelled.

VRT reports that 300 passenger flights have already been cancelled. This represented about 70% of all originally scheduled flights. Last night it was announced that passenger planes will not take off from the airport.

Security guards are dissatisfied with salaries and workload. The estimated waiting time of eight hours has increased further because fewer security guards will be at work tomorrow than expected. “We cannot guarantee the safety of passengers,” airport spokesman Nathalie Pierard told the Flemish channel.

Passengers have the right to a refund or rebooking. The airport also expects long waiting times for Tuesday.

Chaos at European airports

Chaos has reigned at various European airports lately, including Schiphol. The large crowds are the result of structural staff shortages, with a high demand for flights after the two-year corona pandemic.
