Of all Dutch municipalities, Waddinxveen and Blaricum have experienced the strongest growth in recent years due to national relocations. In total there were more than seventy new settlers per thousand inhabitants, by far the highest number of all municipalities.
Blaricum adjacent to Laren was most attractive for the over-50s. In four years, one move added 29 elderly people for every thousand inhabitants. This is apparent from CBS data on trips that have been requested and analyzed by NOS editors and regional broadcasters.
The publishers wanted to know which municipalities and provinces are growing or shrinking (apart from births and deaths) and whether they can choose a different place of residence after the children have left home, especially over 50 years.
two million moves
More than two million people moved to another municipality in the period 2017-2020, according to the latest figures from Statistics Netherlands. In absolute numbers, the major cities attract the most newcomers, Amsterdam is far ahead, but there are also many departures. And then Amsterdam is almost at its lowest point with minus 26,000 net immigration. Waddinxveen in South Holland “wins” with 2,165 extra population plus balance after national movements.
It is more accurate to make a comparison per thousand people. Waddinxveen is therefore the frontrunner of the list. Many new homes have been built in Waddinxveen and Blaricum in recent years, which also attract home seekers from elsewhere.
