Texas security chief: attacker at school could have been knocked out in 3 minutes

Security chief Steven McCraw told the Texas legislature that responding to the shooting was inadequate and “contrary to everything we’ve been taught.”

McCraw said the school’s chief of police made “extremely bad decisions.” For example, it took a long time to take action because the class key was lost. The door turned out not to be locked. “The firefighter didn’t lock the door from the inside.”

The officers waited more than an hour before taking out the gunman. He locked himself in the room and fired over 100 rounds. “The police had guns, the kids didn’t,” McCraw said.

Three minutes later

According to the head of security, the police could have intervened within three minutes. He said there were enough heavily armed officers at the time to distract and possibly disable the gunman. “The only thing holding him back was the commander. He put the safety of his officers above the lives of children.”

Yesterday, within minutes, it turned out that a police officer was standing in the hallway of the school building. It was later reported that there were plenty of heavily armed police about 18 minutes later, but McCraw disputes this.

Journalist Sophie van der Meer also noted that Texas was in mourning after the shooting. Attended a memorial gathering:
