US prosecutors demand 30 to 55 years in prison for Ghislaine Maxwell. The 60-year-old Briton was found guilty of hiring teenage girls late last year and was later abused by businessman Jeffrey Epstein, who committed suicide in his cell in 2019.
A New York judge will rule next Tuesday. Maxwell’s lawyers said last week that he should face no more than five years in prison for his role in the harassment scandal.
Prosecutors write in their documents that Maxwell “played a role in the horrific sexual abuse of several young teenage girls between 1994 and 2004”. They describe their actions as “monstrous”.
Prosecutors point out that Maxwell deliberately selected girls for sexual exploitation. “In doing so, he left lasting emotional and psychological scars on his victims,” prosecutors said. They believe that only a long prison term does justice to what happened to the victims.
The critical role of abuse
Four women testified in the Maxwell case last year. They described harassment at Epstein’s homes in Florida, New York, and New Mexico in the 1990s and 2000s.
Victims said Maxwell played a critical role in bringing about the abuse. He won their trust and convinced the girls to do an Epstein massage. Then the bullying started and it got worse.
Epstein committed suicide in prison in 2019. He sat there waiting for his case. He was arrested a month ago. Maxwell, who was also in love with Epstein, was arrested a year later.
