The UN nuclear agency on Sunday expressed concern about the situation of the staff of the old Chernobyl nuclear power plant, who have stopped carrying out maintenance and repair of equipment due to the stress and fatigue situation they find themselves in.
The director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, was pleased with the recovery of electrical power at the Chernobyl complex, but expressed concern about the situation of the factory’s workers.
“I remain deeply concerned about the safety of Chernobyl and other nuclear facilities in Ukraine,” he said.
In a statement, the IAEA said Ukraine’s nuclear regulatory agency informed it that the plant’s staff “no longer performed repair and maintenance work on safety-related equipment, in part due to their physical and psychological fatigue after working continuously for nearly three weeks.” . .
