The President of Ecuador, William Lassostate of emergency withdrawn due to serious internal commotionproclaimed in six of the country’s twenty-four provinces as part of the protests led by indigenous people over the cost of living.
With the signing of Decree 461, he ended the measure that included the provinces of Chimborazo, Tungurahua, Cotopaxi, Pichincha, Pastaza and Imbabura, where the protests led by the Confederation of Indigenous Nationalities of Ecuador (Conai).
The state of emergency had been declared by Lasso since last Saturday, June 18, initially for three provinces (Imbabura, Pichincha and Cotopaxi), which was later extended to three more (Tungurahua, Chimborazo and Pastaza) on Tuesday, June 21.
With this decision, the government reaffirms “the willingness to guarantee the creation of peace spaces in which Ecuadorians can gradually resume their activities,” according to the Presidency’s General Secretariat for Communications.
