Spain will not be allowed to participate in the Rugby World Cup next year, even after an appeal. The southern European country has already been sanctioned for choosing an unfit player in the two qualifiers for the global tournament to be held in France. Spain protested, but an independent professional panel rejected it, the global rugby union World Rugby reported Monday.
“After examining the documents submitted by the Spanish Federation and World Rugby, the committee has rejected the appeal,” he said. Spain was also deducted points and was fined 25,000 pounds (29,000 euros). Romania was chosen as a substitute.
South African-born Gavin van den Berg had not yet been confirmed to play for the Spanish national team under World Rugby rules. He played two qualifying matches against the Netherlands.
