Russia announces full control of the entire Lugansk . region

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said on Sunday that Russian forces are in control of the entire Ukrainian region of Lugansk, in Donbass, after capturing the main city of Lysychansk, the target of fierce fighting in recent days, AFP said.

“Sergei Shoigu has informed the Supreme Commander of the Russian Armed Forces, Vladimir Putin, of the liberation of the People’s Republic of Lugansk,” said a statement from the Ministry of Defense, quoted by Russian authorities.

Russian forces and their separatist allies took “full control of Lysychansk and other nearby towns, including Belogorovka, Novodroujesk, Maloriazantsevo and Belaya Gora,” adds the statement quoted by AFP, noting it was unable to independently verify this information.

For his part, minutes before this announcement, Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konachenkov had said that fighting in Lysychansk continued and that Ukrainian forces were completely surrounded.

Ukrainian governor of the Lugansk region, Serguiy Gayday, said today on the digital messaging platform ‘Telegram’ that “the Russians have strengthened their positions in the Lysychansk region”.

A spokesman for Ukraine’s defense ministry told the BBC that the city of Lysychansk was not under “complete control” by Russian forces, despite Moscow’s statements.

But he admitted that the situation in the city of Lysychansk “has been intense for some time” with Russian troops “bombing the city non-stop”.
