Russia unfurls flags of Ukraine’s breakaway regions in space

Three Russian astronauts unfurled the flags of the self-declared separatist areas of Lugansk and Donetsk, Ukraine, aboard the International Space Station, according to a report on the Telegram channel of the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

“We celebrate both on Earth and in space”refers to a message accompanied by photos of astronauts Oleg Artémiev, Denis Matvéïev and Sergei Korsakov, waving the flags of the two “republics” of eastern Ukraine.

“Russian and Lugansk forces are in full control of Lysychansk – the LPR’s last major city [República Popular de Lugansk]†they added.

On Sunday, Ukrainian forces announced the withdrawal of this strategic city, allowing the Russian army and pro-Russian separatists to take control of the Lugansk region.

“We are convinced that July 3, 2022 will be forever etched in the history of the Republic. Citizens of the Allied People’s Republic of Donetsk, standby!”Roscosmos added in his message.

The capture of Lysychansk was central to Russia’s plan to conquer all of Donbass, an industrial region partially controlled by pro-Russian separatists since 2014.

For Ukrainian troops it is now necessary to contain the Russian advance to the west and two major cities in the neighboring Donetsk region: Sloviansk and Kramatorsk.
