Seller Middel X arrested for helping 4 suicides

A 74-year-old man from Castricum was arrested last night for assisted suicide. He is said to have sold Middel X suicide powder to more than 500 people via the internet. Police said the suspect was involved in at least four suicides, but other cases were not ruled out.

The police found the man after a suicide in Zeeland and a suspicious death in Breda. A postal package was found in one of these contacts with which he could be returned.

According to the police, the man is also suspected of money laundering, as he earned a considerable amount of money selling drugs.

fierce fight against death

Means X was presented in 2017 by Coöperatie Laatste Wil as a humane way to end life. The real name of the substance, which is actually a preservative, is not disclosed to outsiders for security reasons.

The cooperative sold the Middel X at exchanges, but closed down after several sellers were arrested. The president and several members of Last Will are also on trial for illegal sale: The drug is legally available unless the seller offers it as a suicide powder.

Critics warn that Agent X is not as human as Last Will suggests. “There is often a fierce struggle to the death, lots of cramps and pain, injuries and vomiting,” says Ad Kerkhof, a psychotherapist who counsels suicidal patients and their relatives.

People die 30 minutes to an hour after taking the drug. There is no antidote.
