US federal authorities said they found what appears to be a famous Fabergé egg, a precious piece of jewelry, on a seized Russian superyacht, according to CNN. The discovery, if authenticity is confirmed, is one of the most unusual and unexpected artifacts found in the possessions of Russian oligarchs seized by governments around the world after the invasion of Ukraine.
The discovery was made aboard the superyacht Amadea, the $300 million luxury ship owned by Russian oligarch Suleiman Kerimov, one of the names on blacklists of sanctions imposed by the West.
Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco revealed the possible discovery of the rare piece of jewelry at the Aspen Security Forum, according to CNN. If authentic, this specimen of Fabergé eggs could be one of the few pieces from this collection undiscovered in the world and potentially worth millions.
Fabergé eggs are jewel-encrusted decorative pieces. From 1855 to 1916, about 50 Imperial Easter eggs were made for the Russian Imperial Family. The opulent works were commissioned by the Russian house Romanov and were often between three and five centimeters in size, according to CNN Style. Of the approximately 50 eggs made by the Fabergé house in St. Petersburg for the Russian Imperial family, only a few survive.
Ornamental eggs have sold for millions of dollars over the centuries, but some remain extremely rare finds. Some of these pieces have even popped up in very unlikely places, like one that appeared at a US flea market in 2014 and was estimated to be worth about $33 million at the time, Business Insider recalls.
The egg found by US police on Kerimov’s yacht was discovered after the ship was seized in Fiji. As reported by Business Insider, the FBI also said it found evidence aboard the yacht to accuse Kerimov of US crimes such as money laundering.
