Russia already admits attack on Odessa port but says it hit “military infrastructure”

Russian missiles destroyed Ukraine’s “military infrastructure” in the attack on Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odessa, crucial for grain exports, a Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman said on Sunday after initially denying responsibility.

The attack on Saturday came a day after Kiev and Moscow signed a historic agreement to unblock grain exports.

“Kalibr missiles destroyed military infrastructure in the port of Odessa in a high-precision strike.Maria Zakharova said on Telegram in response to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who said dialogue with Moscow was becoming increasingly untenable after this attack.

Zakharova said Russian missiles destroyed a Ukrainian “patrol boat”.

On Saturday, Ukraine accused the Russian president of “spitting in his face” over the agreement to unblock grain exports brokered by the United Nations and Turkey. Zelensky said the attacks on Odessa showed that Moscow was not fulfilling its promises.

Initially, Russia denied any attack on the port. “The Russians told us that they had absolutely nothing to do with this attack and that they are investigating the matter very closely,” Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said on Saturday.

Ukraine’s western allies, including the United Kingdom and the United States, condemned the attack. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the attack “raises serious doubts about the credibility of Russia’s commitment” to the deal.

The Ukrainian army said its air defenses hit two cruise missiles, but two others hit port facilities.
