German driver Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) tested positive for corona a few days before the opening race in Bahrain and was excluded from participation. The team brought in his compatriot Nico Hulkenberg. Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren) was absent from the test races in Bahrain last week due to the corona infection. The Australian has recovered and will be in action on Friday during the first training sessions.
Pérez missed two races in 2020 when he took the crown. He thinks the reins should be a little looser now. The corona rules in Formula 1 have been relaxed considerably this season. Mandatory tests have been scrapped, but most teams have their own rules.
“If the symptoms are mild, we should discuss whether we will allow riders to participate in the future,” said Perez. Riders can of course decide that themselves,” he says. “You try to avoid getting infected, but luck plays a big role. I’m really sorry for Sebastian and Daniel, but this can happen to anyone.”
