Four US soldiers were killed in a plane crash in Norway during a NATO exercise unrelated to the war in Ukraine.
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store tweeted that they died in an accident on Friday night.
“The soldiers participated in the NATO Cold Response exercise,” he said.
We express our deepest condolences to the families, relatives and companions of the soldiers, “he said.
The Norwegian Armed Forces claimed the plane was a United States Marine Corps V-22B Osprey.
“The plane had a crew of four and was on a training mission in Nordland county in northern Norway,” the note read.
It was heading north towards Bodo, where it was due to land just before 6pm on Friday.
The plane crashed in Gratadalen in Beiarn, south of Bodo.
Police said a search and rescue operation was started immediately. Arriving at the scene at 1:30 pm on Saturday, police confirmed that the crew of four had died.
NATO’s annual exercises in Norway have nothing to do with the war in Ukraine. This year, around 30,000 soldiers, 220 planes and 50 ships from 27 countries participated. Non-NATO members Finland and Sweden also participate.
The exercises started on March 14 and ended on April 1.
No cause has been provided for the incident, but the Norwegian military said Cold Response “will continue as planned with the precautions we have to take due to the weather.”
