G7 shows ‘deep concern’ over Zaporíjia . power plant

On Monday, the G7 countries expressed “deep concern” about the potential risks of a nuclear accident at Ukraine’s Zaporijia power plant and called for guarantees for the IAEA’s “free” access to the facilities.

“We emphasize that all attempts by Russia to close the Ukrainian power plant are unacceptable,” reads the document from the organization that brings together the seven most industrialized countries in the world.

The G7 also refers to the need to inspect International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) personnel on site and in “complete freedom”.

The same statement, signed by the G7 nuclear non-proliferation directors, finds it unacceptable that the nuclear power plant is “used for military activities or storage” of war material.

The issue of the Zaporijia nuclear power plant has become a central theme in the Russian military campaign against Ukraine, six months after the invasion began.

Today, IAEA Director-General Rafael Grossi said that “the long-awaited mission of experts from the UN watchdog to the Zaporijia nuclear power plant is underway”.

“The day has come,” wrote Rafael Grossi on the social network Twitter, adding that “the IAEA support and assistance mission, based in Vienna, is now underway”.
