A 20-month-old girl has died after being struck by hailstone during a violent storm in northeastern Spain, local authorities said on Wednesday.
The hail “fell on the girl’s head” and “she did not survive,” Carme Vall, councilor for the Catalan city of La Bisbal de l’Emporda, told RAC1 radio.
“The hail fell for 10 minutes, but it was terror for 10 minutes,” he said, adding that the hailstones that fell in the area were up to 11 inches wide: “All the hail fell, almost no rain.”
The child was rushed to Josep Trueta Hospital in the nearby city of Girona, but died of his injuries overnight, the hospital said in a statement.
The Catalonia Meteorological Center said the hailstones that fell in the area near the Spanish-French border were the largest in 20 years.
Images broadcast on Spanish television showed several cars with windscreens broken or dented from hail.
The stained glass windows of the town’s church were also shattered by the impact of hailstones, photos released by the camera showed.
