According to Joe Biden, Putin is considering the use of chemical weapons in Ukraine –

Russia’s false claims that Kiev has chemical and biological weapons indicate that Russian President Vladimir Putin is considering using them in the war against Ukraine, US President Joe Biden said Monday, without providing any information.

“Putin is standing by the wall and now he is focusing on other things, such as the claim that we in the United States have biological and chemical weapons in Europe, which is simply not true,” Biden said at a public event.

“(Russia) also suggests that Ukraine has biological and chemical weapons. “This is a clear sign that (Moscow) is considering using them,” he said.

The Russian embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The comments echoed previous comments by officials in Washington and allied countries who accused Russia of spreading baseless claims that Ukraine has a biological weapons program as a possible prelude to launching its own chemical attacks.

Russia’s defense ministry has accused Kiev, without evidence, of planning a chemical attack on its own population to accuse Moscow of using biological weapons and defending itself against an invasion that began on February 24.

Earlier this month, US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan spoke to Russian Security Council secretary Nikolai Patrushev and warned him against “any possible decision by Russia to use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine”.

The White House did not specify what the consequences would be. Biden also said Russia used a supersonic missile on Saturday to destroy a weapons depot “because it’s the only thing they can use with absolute certainty.”

A government official clarified Monday that Biden had confirmed Russia’s use of an advanced missile, but noted the impact of the attack was unknown.

The Russian invasion, which he calls a “special military operation” to disarm Ukraine, has largely ground to a halt, without capturing major cities, but causing significant destruction in residential areas.

Ukraine said Monday it would not comply with Russian ultimatums after Moscow demanded an end to the siege of Mariupol, where hundreds of thousands of civilians are being bombed by Russia.
