Juan Manuel Santos, the only Colombian president to visit Isabel II

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom passed away on Thursday, Buckingham Palace has officially announced. At 96 years old and reigning for nearly 71 years, the monarch’s legacy is remembered mainly in international relations, including that with Colombia.

Isabel II had an important connection to Colombia, but the most remembered moment was without a doubt the visit of former President Juan Manuel Santos in 2016, where she received tributes and even toast with the Queen.

The event took place on November 1, 2016, when Santos traveled to London in the company of María Clemencia Rodríguez de Santos, the first lady. It was a historic moment, as it marked the first time that a Colombian president had been honored on British soil. The streets of London at the time were filled with Colombian flags.
