GTA 5 has been run on an iPhone 17 Pro Max through an Xbox 360 emulator, but the frame rate fell well below what would be needed for comfortable play, according to a Reddit user who carried out the experiment.
The user, known on the platform as mertbaris01, ran the game through XeniOS, an emulator built to execute Xbox 360 titles on iOS devices. The game operated at a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. During normal gameplay, the frame rate held between 19 and 20 frames per second. In more demanding sequences, such as flying a helicopter over the city, it dropped to around 12 FPS. The user also reported that the handset grew noticeably hot during extended use.
The author attributed the low performance primarily to the early state of the XeniOS emulator rather than to the Apple A19 Pro chip inside the device. Running console games through emulation requires significantly more computing resources than executing native applications, and projects of this kind typically receive substantial performance improvements as development and optimisation continue. The iPhone 17 Pro Max itself was noted to have a powerful hardware platform.
The run fell short of a playable experience, but the author said the successful launch was meaningful on its own terms. Getting a title of GTA 5's scope to run on a smartphone at all through emulation was presented as evidence of the potential of modern mobile system-on-chip processors.
