Robert Lewandowski scored twice and won the man-of-the-match award as Chicago Fire beat Charlotte FC in his first home game in Major League Soccer.
The 37-year-old opened the scoring in the 20th minute with a precise finish, then added a second after halftime, directing the ball past the Charlotte FC goalkeeper from inside the penalty area.
The result ended a run of two straight defeats, to Inter Miami and New York City FC, that had led some fans to question the decision to bring the Polish forward to the club. Before the match, the team’s coach said Lewandowski impresses with his professionalism, noting he regularly arrives first to training and is the last to leave.
After collecting the award, Lewandowski posted photos on Instagram, writing that he was just getting started, accompanied by two ball emojis to represent his goals. The post drew thousands of likes and comments.
Gregg Berhalter’s Chicago Fire face Mexican side Necaxa in the Leagues Cup on August 7.
