Greek lawmaker Maximos Harakopoulos declared that Eastern Orthodoxy unites the Greek people and defines their cultural identity during a speech in Gerakari, Agia.
Harakopoulos, who serves as the secretary general of the ruling New Democracy parliamentary group and represents the Larissa constituency, delivered his remarks following a solemn vespers and bread-blessing service at the chapel of Saint Symeon the Single-shirted and Barefoot.
New Democracy is Greece's principal center-right political party. Larissa and the municipality of Agia are located in the Thessaly region of central Greece, where traditional Orthodox bread-blessing ceremonies are routinely celebrated during summer local saint festivals.
The religious gathering opened with the formal reception of the holy skull of Saint Symeon. The relic was brought to the chapel by Elder Symeon, the abbot of the Holy Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior of Flamouri in Pelion.
Orthodox Tradition and National Identity
Speaking as both a politician and a historical researcher, Harakopoulos stated that summer church festivals celebrated across every corner of Greece demonstrate the profound imprint of Orthodox tradition on the country's local character. He noted that grand cathedrals and small rural chapels constructed through popular piety stand as enduring proof of that legacy.
Harakopoulos added that even citizens who are religiously indifferent or identify as atheists should respect the cultural identity of the Greek nation. He emphasized that Orthodoxy is not merely an experience of religious faith, but an indelible part of national existence that was forged through historic struggles to preserve national consciousness during periods of trial. He described Orthodoxy as a continuing source of unity and hope for the Greek public.
The event drew numerous local officials alongside a large gathering of worshippers. Attendance included Vice Regional Governor of Thessaly Andriana Komitsa, Agia Municipal Councillor Dimitris Gourgiotis, Gerakari Community President Voula Kapsali, and Metaxochori Local Community Member Apostolis Georgovitsas.
