Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law extending the country's so-called garage amnesty until September 2031, the United Russia party said on its website.
United Russia chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev had earlier instructed the party's State Duma faction to review and pass the law as a priority. On July 21, State Duma deputies unanimously approved the bill extending the amnesty.
How the amnesty works
The mechanism allows people to legally register sales, exchanges, gifts and inheritance of garages through a simplified procedure. Since the law took effect on September 1, 2021, Russians have registered more than 700,000 such properties this way.
According to the United Russia statement, owners of garages built before the end of 2004, along with the land beneath them, need only submit one application to local self-government bodies with supporting documents. Not only current users but also their heirs or buyers of the garages can register the property.
