Flight bookings to Santander, Asturias, and Bilbao have increased by more than 90 percent for the total solar eclipse on August 12, according to data from Amadeus Travel Intelligence.
Overall flight reservations for arrivals between August 7 and August 12 at destinations along the eclipse path rose by an average of 3 percent compared to the same period in 2025.
The data recorded as of August 1 shows that Santander recorded the highest flight booking growth among cities in the eclipse path with a 105 percent year-on-year increase. Flight bookings to Asturias grew by 99 percent, while bookings to Bilbao increased by 93 percent.
Other cities along the trajectory of the phenomenon also experienced growth in flight reservations. Bookings to Valencia increased by 32 percent, arrivals in A Coruña grew by 20 percent, and flights to Reykjavik in Iceland rose by 16 percent.
Flight booking growth by city and country
The Amadeus study analyzed cities located along the path of the total solar eclipse. The destinations evaluated include Bilbao, Barcelona, Santander, San Sebastián, Asturias, A Coruña, Madrid, Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Ibiza, and Reykjavik.
Denmark led the growth among source markets with a 40 percent year-on-year increase in flight bookings to the region. The United Kingdom followed with 38 percent growth, the Netherlands grew by 33 percent, the United States increased by 30 percent, Canada rose by 17 percent, and Mexico grew by 11 percent.
International arrivals are expected to peak on August 10, with a 39 percent year-on-year surge. That day is projected to be the busiest travel date of the eclipse week.
Travel patterns and visitor demographics
Short stays of one to five nights increased by 11 percent and accounted for 31 percent of total bookings. Medium stays of six to 13 nights made up the largest share, representing 52 percent of all reservations.
Couples formed the largest travel group segment, accounting for 37 percent of all flight bookings. Solo travelers represented 24 percent of bookings, reflecting a 14 percent growth rate, while groups of six or more people made up 9 percent of bookings after a 16 percent increase.
Ahead of the event, Spain's Ministry of Transport activated a special mobility system to assist travel during the eclipse period. Additionally, the European Union is preparing for potential impacts the solar eclipse could have on the European electrical grid.
