The Greek opposition party SYRIZA-PS marked the World Roma Holocaust Remembrance Day on August 2, calling the Nazi extermination of Roma people an indelible wound in human history.
In a statement, the party said the night of August 2, 1944, when Nazis killed thousands of Roma at Auschwitz-Birkenau, must never be forgotten. It described the genocide, known among Roma as the Porajmos, as the murderous result of fascism, institutional racism, and theories of racial purity.
The party said that as the far right rises again across Europe, democrats are obliged to raise a wall against anti-Roma sentiment, social exclusion, and discrimination.
SYRIZA-PS said it would continue to fight for equal rights, full social inclusion, decent housing, and equal access to education, healthcare, and employment for Roma citizens. The statement closed with a call that Nazism and fascism must never return.
