San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan broke his silence on Tuesday regarding the arrest of team owner Jed York in an Ohio prostitution sting, attempting to keep focus on the upcoming NFL season.
Speaking to reporters for the first time since the story emerged, Shanahan dismissed questions about York as irrelevant to players who are just 16 days away from their Week 1 opener against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia.
Shanahan confirmed he has spoken with York over the past two days and on Tuesday following the owner's arrest and subsequent plea deal that saw his prostitution charge amended to disorderly conduct.
"I got to talk to Jed the last two days and today," Shanahan said. "Obviously it's a very tough situation... it's extremely fresh, it's a very, very personal situation."
"I got a lot of respect for Jed," Shanahan added. "I got a lot of respect for Danielle. Their family does mean a lot to me. With it being this personal I'm trying my very best to keep it that way."
When asked whether York would take a step back from managing the franchise in the coming months, Shanahan said York's day-to-day role has remained unchanged during the summer.
"It's been like that this summer anyways," Shanahan said. "It's the same as always. Jed is as good as it gets since I've been here in letting the football people make football decisions."

Details of the Ohio Sting Operation
York, 46, was arrested in East Palestine, Ohio, at 9:35am on Sunday on suspicion of engaging in prostitution. He was booked into Columbiana County Jail and released after posting a $5,000 bond.
Court documents reveal York arranged to exchange $140 for sexual activity with a female after responding to an undercover advertisement placed by law enforcement on a known prostitution website. York reportedly told the woman he would be arriving from Boardman, Ohio.
Upon arriving at the arranged location at the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community in East Palestine, York was met by a law enforcement sting operation.
An agent with the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force took York into custody after discovering he had his cellular device in his possession, which was used to arrange the criminal act.
The undercover sting operation was led by Detective Daniel Haueter, an experienced officer with the East Palestine Police Department.
York, who was born 20 miles from East Palestine in Youngstown, Ohio, was initially charged with engaging in prostitution and possessing criminal tools. Prosecutors amended the prostitution charge to disorderly conduct during a court appearance on Monday morning.
York pleaded no contest to both charges and was sentenced to one day in jail with credit for one day served. He was also fined $1,150, completed an online course, had his cellphone returned, and agreed to forfeit $160 seized during the arrest to the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force as part of the plea agreement.
Divorce Proceedings and Team Ownership History
The legal incident follows York filing for divorce from his wife, Danielle, in May, citing irreconcilable differences. The couple married in 2011, have two sons named Jaxon and Brixton, and agreed to joint legal and physical custody while awaiting a court date for their dissolution case.
York has an estimated net worth of $500 million. Beyond his primary ownership of the 49ers, he co-owns English Premier League soccer club Leeds United and Scottish soccer team Rangers.
Following the court resolution, the NFL issued a statement saying it is aware of the matter and will review it under the league's personal conduct policy. The 49ers stated that because the legal matter has been resolved, the team will provide no further comment.
York is the son of Denise DeBartolo York and John York. They took control of the 49ers after Denise's brother, Eddie DeBartolo Jr., was convicted in a gambling fraud scandal.
DeBartolo Jr., who owned the 49ers during their 1980s and 1990s dynasty when the team won five Super Bowls, stepped down in 1997. He pleaded guilty in 1998 to failing to report a felony after paying $400,000 to former Louisiana Governor Edwin Edwards for a riverboat gambling license, resulting in a $1 million fine and a one-year NFL suspension before receiving a presidential pardon from Donald Trump in February 2020.
Jed York began working for his father in the early 2000s and was named chief executive officer in 2008. He became principal owner in 2024 after acquiring enough of his mother's stake in the franchise.
During York's tenure, the 49ers have won five NFC West titles, advanced to seven NFC Championship Games, and appeared in three Super Bowls, though the franchise has not won a Super Bowl championship since 1994.
York also directed the construction of Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, where the team moved in 2014. The stadium has since hosted two Super Bowls, a World Cup match, and a College Football Playoff title game.
Offseason Troubles and Opening Game
The arrest adds to a troublesome offseason for the 49ers, who open their regular season against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne on September 10.
Shanahan was previously involved in a July 14 traffic accident in Palo Alto, California, that left him unable to coach during training camp. Shanahan collided with a car driven by a 21-year-old woman while driving his Tesla at roughly 20mph in autopilot mode while reaching for his phone.
Police initially blamed the other driver before Shanahan took responsibility for the crash. Authorities refused to release an accident report or bodycam footage from the scene.
Shanahan suffered a concussion, broken ribs, a broken nose, a broken hand, and required more than 40 stitches over his eye following the crash. He was the only person hospitalized, and officers did not issue a citation for cellphone use.
The 49ers are currently continuing their preparations for the upcoming season opener in Australia as the NFL conducts its personal conduct review.
