The Moscow Mayor's Cup is a traditional pre-season ice hockey tournament held annually in the Russian capital. It allows clubs from the Kontinental Hockey League to fine-tune tactics and evaluate roster depth ahead of the regular season campaign. Megasport Arena, a prominent indoor venue in Moscow, hosts the fixtures for the competing KHL teams.
Coaching feedback and squad updates
Ak Bars head coach Anvar Gatiyatulin evaluated the team performance after the victory. Speaking to Sports.ru, Gatiyatulin said that his team showed greater sharpness and offensive urgency on the ice during the match. He noted that the players interacted effectively with one another, which pleased the coaching staff.
Gatiyatulin explained that while securing victories always builds squad confidence, one of the primary goals of the pre-season tournament is discovering optimal line combinations. He added that many of the attacking lines are completely new this season, and coaches are working continuously to establish effective chemistry on the ice.
The head coach also delivered a personnel update regarding forward Mitch Miller. Gatiyatulin confirmed that Miller will miss the first two games of the upcoming KHL regular season schedule.
Final tournament fixtures
The tournament comes to a conclusion on August 30 with the final placement matches. Spartak Moscow will compete against Torpedo for third place in the competition. Ak Bars Kazan will face off against the Shanghai Dragons in the fifth-place decider.
The overall tournament champion will be decided in a final match between Minsk Dynamo and Moscow Dynamo. The annual tournament serves as a key warm-up event for KHL clubs based in Russia and neighboring countries before official league competition resumes.
