Akis Skertsos Accuses Alexis Tsipras of Opportunism

Greek Minister of State Akis Skertsos has launched a fierce attack on former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, accusing him of political opportunism and deception.

In a social media post, Skertsos stated that the fundamental problem facing Tsipras is not his party but the former leader himself. He claimed that Tsipras's political identity is defined by opportunism, political deception, and political cynicism.

Skertsos attached an image to his post showing the phrase thanks but no thanks, explaining it as a clear message declining an offer with zero interest. He wrote that every democracy must engage in a continuous struggle with memory to stay democratic.

Addressing recent political developments, Skertsos noted that SYRIZA had recently decided to cast Tsipras aside like a hair from dough. He added that the party's decision underscored how Tsipras's core political structure remains his own greatest liability.

Background of SYRIZA and New Democracy

Skertsos serves as Minister of State under Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the governing New Democracy administration. As a key cabinet official, he frequently responds to criticisms from opposition figures and defends the government's policy record.

Tsipras led Greece as prime minister from 2015 to 2019 during intense negotiations with European creditors over national bailout terms. He headed SYRIZA, the Coalition of the Radical Left, for over a decade, transforming it from a minor coalition into Greece's main left-wing political force.

After losing national elections to New Democracy in 2019 and again in 2023, Tsipras stepped down from the leadership of SYRIZA. His resignation triggered internal reorganizations, public debates, and factional splits within the party as it struggled to rebuild its electoral standing.

Tensions Between Government and Opposition

Political disputes between New Democracy officials and former SYRIZA leadership remain central to Greek national discourse. Government representatives often point to the economic policies and governance record of the 2015 to 2019 administration as a point of contrast with current administration measures.

The exchanges reflect ongoing friction over how past political events and economic decisions should be remembered by the electorate. Skertsos concluded his statement by emphasizing that democratic institutions rely on maintaining a clear memory of past political actions.
