Washington Capitals captain and forward Alexander Ovechkin has evaluated the possibility of leading the Russian national team, telling Sport24 that he intends to remain a player for now. Ovechkin stated that he does not want to combine playing with the role of a player-coach because Russian hockey has specialists with greater experience.
The forward also admitted that he feels pride and worries when his son takes to the ice. Ovechkin noted that his child has to play against adult hockey players, but described him as fearless.
Contract extension and goal record
Ovechkin previously signed a new contract with Washington. The agreement is for one year, with a salary of $4.25 million for the forward.
In April of this year, Ovechkin broke Canadian Wayne Gretzky's record for the most goals in NHL regular season championships. He set the mark by scoring his 895th goal in 1,487 league matches.
