Alina Korneeva defeated Iva Jovic 6-3, 6-4 in the 1/16 final of the WTA 1000 tournament in Toronto, Canada. The Russian player, ranked 89th in the world, eliminated the American after Jovic had beaten Magda Linette 6-3, 7-5 in the second round.
Korneeva took control early in the first set by breaking Jovic's serve in the opening game and holding her own serve for a 2-0 lead. She broke Jovic again in the third game and pushed her advantage to 4-0. Jovic responded by winning the next three games, but Korneeva held on to take the opening set 6-3.
Match progression and next opponent
The second set began with a series of service breaks from both players. Jovic broke first before Korneeva leveled, but the American broke again and held serve to build a 3-1 lead. Korneeva then won her serve, broke Jovic, and matched her opponent through additional break points to bring the set to 4-4.
Korneeva secured the final two games of the set to close out the match. In the next round, she will play the winner of the match between Coco Gauff and Maria Sakkari.
