Goalkeeper Andre Onana, who is playing for Turkish club Trabzonspor on loan from Manchester United, has gone viral on social media after sharing images of an extensive cupping therapy session.
The 30-year-old Cameroonian goalkeeper posted moments from his recovery routine online, showing dozens of glass cups covering his back, arms and legs. Rather than an impressive save or a blunder on the pitch, the sheer volume of cups drew instant internet attention.
Traditional fire cupping session
Athletes frequently use a small number of suction cups on specific body parts to treat muscle stiffness. However, Onana selected a far more comprehensive version, leaving hardly any bare skin visible across his upper and lower body and making the treatment resemble an art installation.
The treatment featured the traditional method of fire cupping, where a flame is used during the procedure to heat the air inside each cup. As the air cools inside the vessel, it creates suction on the surface of the skin to pull tissue upward.

Cupping therapy is an ancient alternative healing practice that has been adopted by professional athletes for years as part of regular muscle maintenance and post-match recovery. The therapy became widely recognized globally when elite competitors displayed circular skin marks at major international sports events.
Despite its widespread popularity in modern sports, medical experts note that strong scientific evidence supporting the benefits of cupping remains lacking. While some clinical trials suggest the suction may help ease localized pain or muscle discomfort in certain cases, the overall quality of available research is considered low to moderate.
Onana is currently spending the season on loan at Trabzonspor, the Turkish Süper Lig club based in Trabzon, after moving from English Premier League side Manchester United.
